La Mina has six hectares planted with coffee which makes this farm one of the larger ones in the area. Most of the farms here are very small with tiny micro-mills and patios for drying their coffee. It lies at an average altitude of 2000 meters – this is high altitude for growing coffee – which helps to slow down the maturation of the coffee cherry. The slow maturation is one of the factors that helps the sweetness in the final cup. Franco López is a leader in the community and, for the last thirty years, a driving force behind the increased quality of coffee coming from the Buesaco area of Nariño. Franco is also an active member of the Cooperative of Coffee Growers of Western Nariño and is helping the next generation of Nariño coffee farmers understand the factors in growing and processing that influence the quality of the coffee they are producing.
