About
René and Nicolasa Mamani are originally from Escoma, a municipality in La Paz. As a teenager, René visited on many occasions his older brothers in Uchumachi, Caranavi. In 2007 René saw his sister-in-law, Juana Mamani, succeed in the Cup of Excellence competition; it was then that he got enthusiastic about coffee. In 2009, René and Nicolasa moved to Uchumachi, bought a 14-hectare farm, and began to learn about coffee agriculture from their extended family. They have been members of Agricafe's (agricafe.com.bo) Sol de la Mañana program since its beginning a few years ago. The program provides agricultural and market assistance to farmers in the Caranavi region, providing agronomy training to help increase the quantity and quality of coffee from the area. René does the field activities and Nicolasa focuses on post-harvest processing. They’re currently planning a new nursery bed of Caturra for a one-hectare plot.
