About
We have been buying coffee from Perla del Valle for over ten years now. During this time, we have seen María Fanny Guerrero Cañar make many improvements to her farm with the help of her husband and children. They have upgraded their micro-beneficio, planted new trees and have been able to buy a neighbouring farm, so María Fanny now has just over three hectares planted with coffee. This is a good size farm for this area of Nariño and means the farm can provide an income to the family as well as the finance to invest in more capital projects. This year, the family hope to construct a new drying area that will increase the space available for the volume of coffee they are now processing. These kinds of improvements are important for the quality of the coffee. Drying cannot be rushed, and limited space means a bottle neck develops during the harvest. An even and continuous production is important during the harvest. Any slow downs along the way because of inadequate space can mean leaving cherry on the trees for too long before picking, or moving coffee to the dry mill before it is ready. It is a delicate balance.
