Sergio Buesaco has had a winning lot in our Huila competition (see El Mirador) for the past four years. Sergio usually enters the competition with a few of his children and this year his son Fabio's coffee has also done well. Both lots are from the same farm and are blended together. Finca Altamira is at the top of a hill and has no road access. Everything needed at the house or farm is brought up and down to the closest road by pack horses and with this hill, Sergio says, you need to go slowly. There is one hectare (out of the five in total) planted with Caturra and Castillo, with a very small amount of Typica interspersed occasionally. The coffee is processed using the washed method and then dried on elbas which are flat areas under the roof of the house that is exposed to the sun when the roof is retracted. The family also grow beans for the San Agustín market as well as yucca and plantain. Sergio is approaching 80 and is farming with the help of his wife Ricardina and their ten children.
