Finca La Esperanza

This is Oscar Chacón Cubillo’s first crop exported to the UK from his farm La Esperanza. Aged 21, Oscar is the youngest coffee farmer we have ever bought from. Having Oscar’s coffee on our counter is a real treat and we are delighted to be the first UK roaster to sell his coffee with his name on it. La Esperanza was semi-abandoned when Oscar found out it was up for sale. At just 18, he approached the owners and asked if they would consider renting the land to him, but they were keen to sell and settle the estate. Oscar sought help from his parents, Oscar and Francisca Chacón of Finca Las Lajas, and they encouraged his initiative. Oscar Junior negotiated the purchase and has spent the last few years tidying up the eight-hectare farm, replanting all the coffee with humidity resistant varietals and establishing protection for the spring on the land with one hectare of surrounding forest. Oscar also has citrus, avocado, guava and banana for the local markets. The coffee is taken to Finca Las Lajas for processing, sorting and grading during the crop. Outside of the work on his farm, Oscar is studying programming at the local university.
