La Loma is the last coffee to arrive from the competition we held with the help of the exporters we work with in Nariño, Colombia last year. We hold annual competitions in Huila and Nariño and we are delighted with the coffees arriving. During the competition we invite farmers to submit samples and then we spend a few weeks hulling, sample roasting and tasting all the coffees, culminating with a presentation and award ceremony. The premium paid to all the winners helps to pay off mortgages, build new houses and invest in farm maintenance and equipment. This is the first year that José Hugo has participated in our competition. La Loma is located at 1900m which is getting into high altitude for coffee. The higher altitude gives cooler overnight temperatures which slows the maturation of the cherry and helps develop a sweet and complex flavour profile. Climate change is affecting average temperatures, rainfall, sunlight hours, soil conditions and humidity. All of these factors combined means that land once considered too high in Nariño for coffee is now being planted and land that is now too low is being planted with other crops more suited to the new conditions.
