About
Alvans Mutero has fifteen acres (six hectares) of land in the Kirinyaga region. On the farm Alvans has the SL28 varietial which is one of our favourites planted in Kenya – it is known for its berry notes, juicy acidity and syrupy body. Sadly, many SL28 trees have been removed from other farms for varietals that have more resistance to disease and pests. Alvans inherited the farm from his father and has slowly increased the size up to this point by buying smaller plots that border the farm as they have come up for sale. Mutero is a beautiful farm which is wonderfully looked after. Alvans built his washing station himself which is tiled to help maintain the cleanliness. The station is cleaned down every morning and prepared for the harvest to arrive later in the day. As well as coffee, Alvans grows bananas, casava, macadamia and avocados. He also has three cows which provide milk, and importantly manure. The manure is mixed with coffee pulp from the processing to make a good nutritional compost which helps the trees maintain their growth.
