About
Montes de Cristo is a very small, highly diversified farm in the San Juan de Naranjo region of Costa Rica. This pocket of land is located next to the National Reserve of El Chayote, a protected area of some 677 hectares. The area is rich in flora and fauna and has several springs which attract coyotes, tigrillos, rabbits and snakes. Doña Carmen grows succulents, orchids, and stone fruits, alongside her coffee, and keeps as many chickens as the coyotes can spare. Doña Carmen will continue to farm Montes de Cristo for as long as she is able but 2025 has already been a challenging year. This latest harvest has been especially challenging with a very wet January which has made it difficult to both get the harvest in, processed, and dried. Thankfully, Doña Carmen had help from two of her neighbouring farmers, who helped with the picking and allocated her some space further down the hill where it was drier, for drying.
