About
Huabal is a combination of coffees from three farms in San Francisco de Agua Colorada. The farms are owned by cousins Agustina Villanueva, Elver Coronel, and Manuel Villanueva. The coffee is put together by Cultivar, the exporters we work with in Peru. This is the fourth year we have selected Huabal, and we are really pleased to have the coffee available on our counter again. It has been a tricky couple of years in this coffee growing region in Peru, with a bit too much rain and some very cold temperatures which have threatened frost a few times. Coffee does not do well with either, too much rain can impact cherry maturation, and frost can kill new growth and even entire trees if it is severe. We’re hoping to visit the producers of Huabal again later this year and hear more about how the town of San Francisco de Agua Colorada was founded. It is only twenty-five years old, with a population of seventy people. The town supports the small-scale coffee farmers and market gardeners in the area.
