About
This lot was put together by the Peruvian exporter Cultivar in Jaén with coffee delivered to them by the Coronel Villanueva family. This is the third year we have worked with the family and during the harvest we had the opportunity to visit Agustina Villanueva, Elver Coronel, and Manuel Villanueva. Their farms are all located in the San Francisco de Agua Colorada village of the Huabal district. Coffee is grown here at high altitude which keeps the maturation rate of the cherry slow. This helps bring the clarity of fruit and juicy sweetness we have begun to associate with coffees grown in Huabal. The lower temperatures that higher altitude brings host their own dangers though; frost is always a risk and high wind in exposed areas of the farm is problematic during flowering. Despite these challenges, this crop was very productive in comparison to previous years. The families have other products for the internal markets including a dairy herd for milk and cheese, tree tomato (tamarillo) fruit and sugar cane. The sugar cane is juiced, boiled, and built into bricks of panela. Intercropped with the coffee there is also many types of tubers, corn and beans.
